DESCRIPTION:Denison University?s International Studies Program welcomes Joanna Talewicz-Kwiatkowska presenting ?Forgotten Holocaust? Memorializing the Genocide of Roma and Sinti? at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday\, April 12\, in the Barney-Davis Hall Boardroom (200 West Loop). This event is free and open to the public. For more information\, contact Isis Nusair at 740-587-8537 or visit Denison.edu. For years\, any memory of the extermination of the Roma was more or less non-existent. While the newly established German Federal Republic quickly acknowledged the Jewish victims\, it kept silent for decades and did not grant compensation rights to the Roma people who had survived the war. Now\, the Roma genocide is no longer a forgotten page of history\; it has been recognized by leading national and international institutions. Yet\, many challenges still lie ahead. Despite numerous initiatives by the Roma communities\, as well as local and global support\, it is still believed that the Roma themselves should bear sole responsibility for commemorating the genocide and for disseminating knowledge about their history. Talewicz-Kwiatkowska has a doctorate in cultural anthropology. Currently\, she is a 2015-2016 Fulbright Visiting Fellow at Rutgers University\, and works as an assistant professor at the Jagiellonian University. She is a lecturer in the postgraduate studies program: Totalitarianism-Nazism-Holocaust created by the State Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau. She is the author of the book\, ?The Influence of the EU Financial Activities on the Social Situation of the Roma People of Poland.? She also writes numerous academic and popular scientific articles dedicated to Roma and Sinti issues.
