He has received fellowships and awards from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the Poetry Society of America\, among other honors. He is the poetry editor of The Kenyon Review. Townsend is the author of three books of poetry and the editor\, with David Baker\, of a collection of essays\, Radiant Lyre: on Lyric Poetry.
