Denison: 'POWER: From the Mouths of the Occupied'
Denison University’s Laura C. Harris Symposium welcomes Patrisse Khan-Cullors presenting a multimedia production, titled “POWER: From the Mouths of the Occupied,” as part of the college’s Martin Luther King Day Celebration. The event begins with Denison’s Gospel Choir and other musical ensembles at 6:30 p.m. followed by the performance at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 23, at Swasey Chapel (200 Chapel Drive). This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Ann Caldwell at 740-587-6297 or visit Denison.edu/mlk. Produced and directed by Khan-Cullors, “POWER: From the Mouths of the Occupied” was created by Denison students during the fall semester, specifically to be presented as part of Denison’s annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration. Khan-Cullors is an artist, organizer and freedom fighter living and working in Los Angeles. Internationally known as the co-founder of Black Lives Matter, she is the founder and a board member of the Los Angeles-based organization Dignity and Power Now, and the director for truth and reinvestment at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. She is active in many other social justice organizations, including Black Organizing for Leadership and Dignity. This event is co-sponsored by Denison University’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program and the Office of the Provost. The event is also a part of the 2016-2017 Laura C. Harris Symposium. The year-long symposium hosts speakers and artists discussing the theme “Making Just Democracies?” which seeks an emergence of dialogue and action that work toward democratizing subjects and objects – natures and cultures – into a collective embrace.
