‘Listening Well (For Writers)’ workshop led by Jeff Gill
Denison University’s Center for Narrative Journalism presents "Listening Well (For Writers)" workshop led by Jeff Gill. This workshop is part of a series titled “Tell Better Stories” that is supported by the Mellon grant.
In order to tell someone else’s story, you have to listen. Listening is often described as if it’s an entirely passive process, but to truly listen to another person requires the active engagement of the listener. Even to tell one’s own story, you have to teach yourself how to still the clamor of many other competing sounds and voices and hear what you are trying to say. Writing itself can also be a form of listening. In our time together, we will work on the physical, non-verbal, and mental processes around listening well. Using insights gained from the practice of mediation, we will work on hearing each other a little better, listen to ourselves, and work on some beginning steps to write what we’ve heard.
Gill is a pastor, mediator, and freelance writer based in Granville. He writes two weekly columns, “Faith Works” for the Newark Advocate and “Notes From My Knapsack” for the Granville Sentinel.
