Pelotonia is a community of riders, virtual riders and volunteers working together toward one goal: to end cancer. For participants, Pelotonia is more than just a bike ride. Riders vary from cancer survivors to experienced cyclists, and many ride in honor or in memory of a friend or family member who is fighting or has fought the disease.
Pelotonia’s operating expenses are covered by funding partners so that 100% of every dollar raised by Pelotonia riders, virtual riders and volunteers goes directly to fund cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). Pelotonia’s three major funding partners, Limited Brands Foundation, Huntington Bank and the Richard and Peggy Santulli Foundation, have each committed $2.5 million over five years to fund Pelotonia’s operations, while the American Electric Power Foundation, Nationwide Insurance and The Scotts Company have also made multi-year funding commitments.
Each year, Pelotonia creates a powerful three-day experience that starts on Friday afternoon with an Opening Ceremony celebration and concludes on Sunday afternoon at the finish party for the 180-mile riders. During the weekend, Pelotonia offers numerous ride options to attract riders with a wide range of abilities. Riders may choose a one-day ride of 25, 50, 75 or 100 miles or a two-day ride of 155 or 180 miles. Pelotonia’s full-service approach to the weekend includes providing nutrition, hydration, first aid, bike maintenance, transportation, lodging and entertainment to ensure a safe, successful and fun weekend for all of its riders.
Depending on the ride distance they choose, Pelotonia riders commit to raise anywhere from $1,200 to $2,200 for cancer research. Most riders surpass their fundraising commitments by meaningful amounts as they are inspired by the Pelotonia community and understand that 100% of the funds they raise go directly to cancer research. The success of Pelotonia’s efficient fundraising model has led to substantial national interest from other cancer programs nationwide.
Pelotonia 12, which took place August 10-12, was the largest cycling event in the country in terms of participation with 6,212 riders coming from 42 states and 3 countries. Additionally, Pelotonia had 3,144 virtual riders and 2,103 registered volunteers. Pelotonia 12 raised $16.9 million, bringing Pelotonia’s 4-year total to $42.2 million for cancer research.
