Who is South End Newark?? Find Out at The Works
The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art and Technology presents “Who is South End Newark”, an exhibition by Amanda Gunn, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at Denison University, and twelve senior students. As a seminar class theme, Gunn posed this question to her students, “Who is South End Newark?” In response, Gunn and her class worked with residents of South End Newark, holding in-depth interviews, and working to answer the basic question: how do members of this community identify themselves? See their answers in this unique exhibit currently on display in The Works Central Art Gallery located on South 2nd Street.
Interviews between the students and members of the community were audio-recorded, and the interviewees were photographed. Anne Crowley, Director of Educational Technology, assisted the students in creating shorter podcasts from the interviews. These podcasts are also featured in the exhibition, along with posters of the residents overlain with poems the students wrote about each interviewee, using their own words.
“Who is South End Newark?” will remain on display until October 12. Gallery admission is free and open to the public.
The Works is an interactive learning center where people of all ages can have fun and be inspired by the history, technology and artistic accomplishments of the community we serve. Visit us on the web at: www.attheworks.org.
