The restrictions created by the COVID-19 pandemic have given us a special opportunity to explore this rich repertoire, including Felix Mendelssohn's "Sinfonia No. 8," which dates from his precocious teenage years, and two wonderful works by Black American composers: "Mother and Child," by William Grant Still and Jessie Montgomery's scintillating "Starburst." We will close with Samuel Barber's classic, "Adagio for Strings," which stands more than any other American work as a symbol of mourning, resilience, and hope.
