Guitar virtuoso Julian Lage and the Julian Lage Trio will open the spring 2014 season for the acclaimed Vail Series at Denison University at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, in Swasey Chapel (200 Chapel Drive). While Denison students, faculty and staff may attend free of charge, general admission tickets are $15 each. For more information, contact Mike Morris at 740-587-6557 or visit http://www.vailseries.org.
At the tender age of 11, guitar prodigy Julian Lage recorded his debut with Vail Series alumni Edgar Meyer, Béla Fleck and more. At age 22, his 2009 album "Sounding Point" was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Jazz Album category. Now a venerable 26 years old, Lage has grown to especially appreciate Americana and the simple elegance of the acoustic guitar. "When you’re playing that music on the guitar, it’s as though all the lights are green," he says.
The Julian Lage Trio includes innovative musicians bassist Jorge Roeder and percussionist Tupac Mantilla. An award-winning jazz bassist, Roeder hails from Lima, Peru and studied at the Rinsky Korsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg, Russia. Grammy-nominated Mantilla appears in major venues all over the world, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Tanglewood. He is the director of programs at the Columbia Javeriana University, Panama Jazz Festival and the global percussion network PERCUACTION.
During their visit, the musicians will host an informal brown-bag lunch with Denison students, faculty, and staff, opening the door for both vocal and musical conversations.
