*What is histiocytosis? Histiocytosis is a rare blood disease caused by an excess of white blood cells called histiocytes. They cluster together and can attack skin, bones, liver, spleen, lungs, and the central nervous system. The disease can be chronic, debilitating, and life-threatening. Histiocytosis is treated by oncologists with chemotherapy and radiation. The vast majority of those affected are children, but it is also diagnosed in adults of all ages.
