Week of Abrepaso Flamenco events: “Earth, water, air, and fire: from Africa to Al-Andalus” An evening with Abrepaso

The Department of Modern Languages with the support of the Department of Dance presents a week long of Abrepaso Flamenco related events ending with “Earth, water, air, and fire: from Africa to Al-Andalus” An evening with Abrepaso Flamenco.

Events dates and times are as follows:

• Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 3 p.m.: Panel on the influence of African cultures in the Hispanic world in room 105 of Higley Hall (100 Ridge Road). Panel includes:

  • Dosinda Alvite, Modern Languages (Spanish) and Latin American & Caribbean Studies

  • Mónica Ayala-Martínez, Modern Languages (Spanish and Portuguese) and Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

  • Andrew Holzman, (Pop culture and Mexican cuisine)

  • Professor Marion Ramírez, Dance (Latinx Dance, Somatics and Contemporary Dance Performance)

• Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 6 p.m.: Screening of "Gurumbé. Afro-Andalusian Memories" in the viewing room of the Denison Library (400 West Loop).

• Thursday, Feb. 16, at 12 p.m.: A master dance class, led by guest performers, Alice Blumenfeld and Marija Temo in the Doane Dance Studio (231 West College).

• Thursday, Feb. 16, at 3 p.m.: A master guitar class, led by guest performers, Alice Blumenfeld and Marija Temo in the Burke Recital Hall of the Michael D. Eisner Center for the Performing Arts (240 West Broadway).

• Thursday, Feb. 16, at 4 p.m.: A lecture on the history of Flamenco presented by guest performers, Alice Blumenfeld and Marija Temo in rehearsal room 207 of the Michael D. Eisner Center for the Performing Arts (240 West Broadway).

• Saturday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m.: “Earth, water, air, and fire: from Africa to Al-Andalus” An evening with Abrepaso in the Burke Recital Hall of the Michael D. Eisner Center for the Performing Arts (240 West Broadway). Ticketed event.
