Campbell is a historian, critic, and curator of art and design. His work examines the intersections of identity-based political movements/communities and visual and material cultures. Campbell's book "Queer X Design: 50 Years of Signs, Symbols, Banners, Logos, and Graphic Art of LGBTQ" is the first-ever illustrated history of the iconic designs that have shaped contemporary queer politics. His writings have also appeared in Artforum, Aperture, and Terremoto, and he is an assistant professor of Critical Studies at the University of Southern California.
