‘Telling Your Truth: Writing Memoir’ workshop led by Heather Shaw
Denison University’s Center for Narrative Journalism presents "Telling Your Truth: Writing Memoir" workshop led by Heather Shaw. This workshop is part of a series titled “Tell Better Stories” that is supported by the Mellon grant.
Everyone has a story to tell. Isn’t it time you told yours? In this personal essay workshop, we’ll tackle the basics of writing about ourselves in a way that is honest and engaging for a wider audience, including writing about family, writing truthfully from memory, and choosing what to include (and what to leave out) to keep the story moving in the right direction. We’ll spend some time breaking down successful memoirs to see what makes them tick and apply what we learn to our own projects. Participants will come away with some practical strategies for choosing a topic, outlining the story, and finishing that first draft.
Shaw is a freelance writer from Newark, Ohio and winner of the Award of Excellence from the Columbus Arts Festival.
